    JOHN HAYMES NEWTON –
    “Superboy/Clark Kent” (SEASON ONE 1988-1989)

    John Haymes Newton as Superboy

John Haymes Newton starred as Superboy in syndicated live-action, adventure series. The New York-based actor from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was chosen during an extensive nation-wide search headed by famed casting director Lynn Stalmaster.

Superboy, the half-hour filmed series which follows the college adventures of the 19-year-old Superman, is John Haymes Newton’s first major television role. His most recent theater credits include a leading role in a Love Creek production of Fantasy Restaurant at New York’s Cubiculo Theater. He has been seen on television in the popular Levi’s 501 Jeans and Norwegian Cruise Lines commercials.

A natural athlete, he is accomplished at the defensive art of karate. Upon arriving in New York City to pursue acting, he landed a job as a bodyguard to celebrities like Melanie Griffith and Edward (“The Equalizer”) Woodward. Further supplementing his income, Newton, who also loves to cook, was a part-time chef at New York’s American Festival Cafe Restaurant at Rockefeller Center.

As fate would have it, it was in his home in North Carolina, not New York City, where Newton got the chance to audition for Superboy. Frustrated with the writer’s strike, he went home to Chapel Hill to visit his family for a week and traveled to the nearby town of Wilmington to see if there was any film casting going on. It just happened that Lynn Stalmaster was in town for one day casting for the lifeguard part in the movie, “Heatwave.” John did not land the lifeguard role, but the next day went flying off to Orlando, Florida for a screen test for the part of Superboy. That test was unanimously approved by the Ilya Salkind and by Line Producer Bob Simmons.
